For the Love of Cinema: Top 10 Tom Hanks Movies to Watch with Your Loved Ones and Savour the Day Well-Spent

August 19, 2020

From classic and heart-warming love stories to impeccable comedies to action-thrillers, Tom Hanks is one guy who has successfully got into the skin of each and every character he has ever portrayed on celluloid.

It won’t be wrong to say that over the years the actor has carved out a league of his own. Obviously, this has been possible due to his sheer will, love for film-making and the passion for mastering his craft.

And to honour him, I have hand-picked the top 10 Tom Hanks movies every movie-buff must watch atleast once.

Now, I know that I may have missed out on several of them but hey, its Tom Hanks. You cannot compartmentalized the guy. Like ever.

So, apologies for the ones I have missed out on. (which surely I know are just too many)

1. The Da Vinci Code (2006)

Based on Dan Brown’s novel of the same name, this is basically a murder mystery.

The murder happens inside the Louvre, and clues hidden in the Da Vinci paintings, lead Tom Hanks aka Robert Langdon to the discovery of a religious mystery behind which there is a two thousand years old secret society.

And the truth, if out, can shake the basis of Christianity itself.

For anyone who is into thrillers and religious stuff must watch this pacy drama unfold on your screens. You will surely like it.

2. Sully (2016)

In this, Tom Hanks plays real-life Chesley Sullenberger, an American pilot who became a hero after that historic crash-landing on the Hudson River, saving the lives of the entire crew and passengers onboard.

Tom Hanks has brilliantly pulled-off his job portraying the real-life Mr. Sully. For anyone who likes to watch biographies (if you may want to call it hat) must watch it while munching on some delicious snacks.

3. Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Rated 8.1 on IMDB, this is yet another blockbuster of a performance by Tom Hanks.

The story unfolds as a seasoned FBI agent is in hot pursuit of Frank Abagnale Jr.(Leonardo Di Caprio) who has successfully forged checks worth millions of dollars posing as a Pan Am pilot.

Now, with the presence of two most amazing actors, how could this movie be nothing but great.

4. The Terminal (2004)

Now, this is quite cute for a movie. Tom Hanks is, like always, brilliant in portraying his role as an East-European tourist who somehow finds himself stranded in JFK airport due to some political instability and war-like conditions in his own country.

What ensues is an emotional ride; a mix of fun, tears, happiness, laughter and everything in between.

If you are a Tom Hanks fan and you haven’t watched it yet, then its time to do so. Like right away.

5. Cast Away (2000)

In this one, Tom Hanks plays a sincere FedEx executive who, unfortunately, undergoes a physical and emotional trauma-cum-transformation after his plane crash lands on a deserted island and there he has to spend about 4 years before he could come back home.

How does he manage that is the thing to watch in the movie? It is rated 7.8 on IMDB and is a must-watch for any thriller lover.

6. Saving Mr Banks (2014)

Now, this is just a lovely movie to watch. Rated 7.5 on IMDB, the story takes us back to the past when the iconic author P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after a somewhat reluctant meeting with the great Walt Disney.

In the movie, which is based on real-life events, Mr. Disney is keen on adapting the author’s books for the big screen. And for the uninitiated, the movie was the all time classic Mary Poppins.

7. Captain Phillips (2013)

This brave story is based on real-life events which showcase the true story of Captain Richard Phillips whose cargo ship, the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, was hijacked in 2009 by a group of Somali pirates.

It is said that it was the first of its kind case to be happening in the last two-hundred years.

8. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

It is perhaps one of my top 5 Tom Hanks movies to watch and also an all time favourite.

The movie depicts the story following the Normandy Landings during the world war 2 timeline. A group of U.S. soldiers have to go behind the enemy lines for the sake of retrieving a paratrooper whose 3-4 brothers (I don’t remember exactly) have been killed in action.

However, the government decides that a mother shouldn’t lose all her sons in the battle thus, it becomes a key decision to save the chap. And guess who’s team is assigned with the task.

Yep, you guessed it right. So, if you want to watch a ton of bloody war-filled action throwing in unlimited bullets, panzers, tanks then this is the movie to go for.

9. Bridge of Spies (2015)

If I am not wrong, then this one too is based on real life events of the cold war.

During that period, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy and then also help the CIA simultaneously to facilitate an exchange of that spy against a Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot.

If you don’t have anything particular in your schedule then you must go for it.

10. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)

It won’t be wrong to say that Tom Hanks is at his creative best in this cult biographical drama.

This one’s based on the real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and the journalist Lloyd Vogel.

It is just a gripping emotional ride throughout and along the way also helps us in learning some important life-lessons in the core of which lies one word – Forgiveness.

Bonus Tom Hanks Movie – Forrest Gump (1994)

Oh okay, I had to add this extra movie. I couldn’t help it as Tom Hanks is just a treat to watch anytime on the screen. Isn’t it so?

Based on the novel of the same name the story revolves around a character Forrest Gump and incredibly captures the events from Vietnam war to watergate along with several other historical events in the heart of which lies Forrest Gump’s own love life and story.

If you like cinema for what it is – a medium to spread a message then, oh boy, you cannot miss out on this one. I hope that you would have liked this piece of content. It is possible that you may have already watched many of them or perhaps all of them but then, when its Tom Hanks, it’s worth it.
